Giovanni's Room was such a good read! I definitely took a little longer with this one, as I just closed it this weekend. Heart-wrenching, thought-provoking, and ahead of its time, I think this has climbed the list of my top favorites.

Honestly, the entirety of Chapter Two of Part One. There were so many great quotes in there, some of which were already underlined from the previous owner of the copy I acquired.

""Nobody can stay in the garden of Eden," Jaques said."

"...it takes strength to remember, it takes another kind of strength to forget, it takes a hero to do both."

""And when you have waited—has it made you sure?""

""...Confusion is a luxury which only the very, very young can possibly afford and you are not that young anymore.""

Just an excellent chapter in an overall incredible story. 💖

Those quotes are incredible. Love that you got to see what the previous reader underlined. A couple of these I scribbled under too! 😮‍💨 I’ve wonder about that garden of Eden moment as well. What did you think Jacques meant by that?

I think he means that paradise is temporary. Christians believe that Adam and Eve were ejected from the Garden of Eden—forced out of paradise into a cruel and dangerous world.

I believe that Jacques was meaning that, in the end, we all have to face injustice and cruelty. Perhaps, he means that life can't be a walk in the garden forever; while the garden is nice, you can only walk through it so long before you've seen everything and it's time to go home to the "real world."

It's an interesting comment, for sure! What are your thoughts on it?
