I’m so proud of you Amani - this is fucking beautiful, you’re so funny and I’m also crying. I’m so happy you were able to run recently. That small window of being able to rely on your body is euphoric. You inspire me, and all other disabled baddies. Such a wonderful addition to narrate it - it brings it to life in the most wonderful way. I’m giggling and sniffling from across the ocean. You’ve made me feel baby! I felt all those words. That last line was perfect 🦋💖❤️
Stunning, Amani - you and your storytelling. I still want to process how perfectly you weaved these narratives together but in a sentence, this story made me feel everything. Thank you for sharing this in joy and reflection and humor and heartfelt writing plus a sprinkling of film pics to evidence how much of a baddie you are. So excited for you and for the glory of beach runs. ughhhhh my heart is so happy for you!!!!!
I don't even know where to start with this. The Hope in your name must have been prophecy. You are a rare soul that is enlightened and polished by your hellish hardships. Thank you for so vividly and generously sharing your journey with us. I feel like I know you so much better now. Joy is truly a divine resistance. 💜
Such a beautiful story. I went through all the emotions and the feels here. The jewelry line was heartbreaking, but just perfect. Thank you, for adding the voice over. It just made it that much more immersive.
I learned to ride a motorcycle in my 50's. I've done 70+ day trips with over 15k miles all over the country, ridden 1,000 miles within a 24 hour period. I tried to learn off-road, but my knees are too old. I grew to love the journeys, not the destinations. I came to San Francisco and became afraid of riding, despite the bike-aware culture here because now I find, while drivers are often aware, they also just don't care. Or they drive like they're jealous of a biker's ability to split a lane. I still ride, but California is my least favorite state to do it in now, ironically. Beautiful comeback for you, Amani. Elaine thank you so much sharing this and the song! You’ve made my day! Welcome to the newsletter I’m so glad you’re here! That’s really incredible you’ve ridden 15k miles wow! I imagine you have so many stories. What I would do to see the movie of your life! Good reminder on loving the journey rather than the destination. Also very wise to become afraid of riding in San Francisco! Unfortunately you are very right the driving culture simply doesn’t care about motorcyclists. Definitely jealous of lane splitting hahaha! The cop on the scene of the accident had a bias towards motorcyclists too but that comes as no surprise! My favorite memories are of riding “the loneliest road” in America 🥰 (didn’t get very far though!)
Holy fuck. The things we take for granted, the simple act of strapping on shoes and sprinting. Thank you for sharing this heartwrenching story. I am in awe.
Amani, this piece genuinely made me tear up. It’s incredibly raw and vulnerable and unlike most of what I’ve read on Substack. I love and appreciate your work so much and I’m beyond proud of you ❤️
This is so powerful. You are such an amazing writer and an inspiring person. Also, girls on the run was my sorority’s philanthropy 🤍 love seeing it spread joy in girls.
